In 1998, Liu Qiangdong initially rented a counter in Zhongguancun and named it "JD Multimedia", which mainly sold optical and magnetic products. This was the predecessor of JD. By 2003, JD Multimedia had opened more than ten branches across the country. Unfortunately, due to the impact of SARS, Liu Qiangdong suspended the closure of offline stores and began to seek ways to sell online.

On January 1, 2004, the JD Multimedia website was officially launched. By the end of the year, Liu Qiangdong decided to completely transform and focus on e-commerce. Later, JD began to expand into all categories and built its own integrated warehousing and distribution logistics system. It has now become one of the largest e-commerce websites in China
