The Amazon covers an area of 691.5 square kilometers. The Amazon River basin starts from the source of the Madeira River in southern Bolivia in Branco, Brazil in the north (about 20° south latitude), starts from the source of the Paute River in Cuenca, Ecuador (79°31' west longitude), and ends at the Bay of Marajo in Brazil in the east (about 48° west longitude). The entire basin spans 25° latitude and 31°30' longitude, with a basin area of 6.915 million square kilometers, accounting for about 39% of the entire area of South America. The Amazon Plain, which the main stream passes through, covers an area of 5.6 million square kilometers, the largest plain in the world.
