There are five famous rivers in Sichuan, namely the Yangtze River, Min River, Tuo River, Fujiang River and Jialing River.
1. The Yangtze River originates from the southwest side of the Geladandong Peak of the Tanggula Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the "Roof of the World", and is the mother river of the Chinese nation. The main stream flows through 11 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities, including Qinghai, Tibet, Sichuan, Yunnan, Chongqing, Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Jiangsu and Shanghai, and flows into the East China Sea east of Chongming Island. It is 6,397 km long, more than 900 km longer than the Yellow River (5,464 km). Among the world's major rivers, it is second only to the Nile River in Africa and the Amazon River in South America. It is the third longest river in the world and the longest river in Asia.
2. The Minjiang River is the most important water resource of the Chengdu Plain. Historically, the irrigation projects represented by the Dujiangyan Irrigation System on the Minjiang River created the Land of Abundance in the Chengdu Plain of Sichuan. The total drop of the Minjiang River is 3,560 meters (some say the total drop is 2,877 meters (▽3143-▽266)), and the basin area is 135,881 square kilometers, of which 126,280 square kilometers are in Sichuan. There are 30 tributaries with a basin area greater than 500 square kilometers, and 10 tributaries with a basin area greater than 1,000 square kilometers. The estuary flow is 2,830 cubic meters per second. The hydropower reserves are 8.2 million kilowatts.

Sichuan has many rivers with long history. There are 1,419 rivers of various sizes in Sichuan, of which 345 have a drainage area of more than 500 square kilometers and 22 have a drainage area of more than 1,000 square kilometers. It is known as the "Province of Thousand Rivers". Except for the Baihe River and Heihe River in the northwest, which flow from south to north into the Yellow River, the rest belong to the Yangtze River system. The Jinsha River, Minjiang River, Jialing River, Tuojiang River, Fujiang River and other rivers are all more than 500 kilometers long. All rivers converge from the marginal mountains to the bottom of the basin and flow into the mighty Yangtze River. The Yangtze River rushes eastward for thousands of miles, breaking through the mountains and connecting with the sea.
