南京城内主要河流有长江和秦淮河.长江南京段从江宁铜井镇南开始,至江宁营防乡东为止,境内长约95公里。秦淮河全长103公里;到南京武定门外分两股,一股为干流,称外秦淮河,绕城经中华门、水西门、定淮门外由三汊河注入长江;又一股称内秦淮河,由通济门东水关入城,在淮清桥又分为南北两支,南支为“十里秦淮”,经夫子庙文德桥至水西门西水关出城,与干流汇集,北支即古运渎、经内桥至张公桥出涵洞口入干流。南京市北部有滁河,干流全长110公里,河道弯曲,集水面积7900平方公里。南部有淳溧运河和天生桥河。
The main rivers in Nanjing are the Yangtze River and the Qinhuai River. The Nanjing section of the Yangtze River starts from the south of Tongjing Town, Jiangning, and ends at the east of Yingfang Township, Jiangning, with a length of about 95 kilometers within the city. The Qinhuai River is 103 kilometers long. It is divided into two branches outside Wudingmen in Nanjing. One is the main stream, called the Outer Qinhuai River, which flows around the city through Zhonghuamen, Shuiximen, and Dinghuaimen and flows into the Yangtze River from Sanchahe. The other branch is called the Inner Qinhuai River, which enters the city from the East Water Gate of Tongjimen and is divided into two branches at Huaiqing Bridge. The southern branch is the "Ten Li Qinhuai", which passes through Confucius Temple Wende Bridge to the West Water Gate of Shuiximen and exits the city, merging with the main stream. The northern branch is the ancient Yundu, which passes through Neiqiao to the culvert of Zhanggong Bridge and enters the main stream. There is the Chuhe River in the north of Nanjing. The main stream is 110 kilometers long, with a winding river channel and a catchment area of 7,900 square kilometers. There are Chunli Canal and Tianshengqiao River in the south.

The Yangtze River originates from the southwest side of the Geladandong Peak of the Tanggula Mountains on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the "Roof of the World". The main stream flows through 11 provincial administrative regions (eight provinces, two cities and one district) including Qinghai Province, Tibet Autonomous Region, Sichuan Province, Yunnan Province, Chongqing City, Hubei Province, Hunan Province, Jiangxi Province, Anhui Province, Jiangsu Province and Shanghai City, and flows into the East China Sea east of Chongming Island. It is 6,397 kilometers long, ranking third in the world in terms of length, second only to the Nile River in Africa and the Amazon River in South America.
