The Amazon River is the world's largest river, with a total length of 6,437 kilometers and more than 1,000 tributaries. The basin area is more than 7 million square kilometers, including Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela and other countries, accounting for about 40% of the area of South America. The riverbed in the middle and lower reaches of the river is very wide, generally 4 to 6 kilometers, and the lower reaches reach 25 to 80 kilometers during the flood season. The estuary area can reach 200 kilometers, presenting a vast ocean, and the fresh water rushes into the sea for 150 kilometers. The water depth in the middle and lower reaches is generally more than 60 meters, and in some places it is as deep as 240 meters.
In 1500, when the European explorer William Benson went north along the Brazilian coast, he mistakenly thought that the Amazon River was a "freshwater sea" at its mouth, while the Brazilians called the Amazon River a "river sea". Every year, more than 3,800 cubic kilometers of water flow from the Amazon River into the Atlantic Ocean, accounting for 1/9 of the total water volume of all rivers in the world.
Its hydropower resources are extremely rich, and about 100 million kilowatts of electricity can be generated in Brazil alone. The entire Amazon River system has good shipping conditions; 35,000 kilometers of river channels, including tributaries, are navigable, and 3,000-ton ocean-going ships can go up more than 600 kilometers along the main stream to Iquitos, Peru.
From a bird's eye view, the Amazon River basin is submerged in a lush forest sea. It is not an exaggeration to call this place a "forest sea". The forest area of the Amazon River basin is indeed far greater than the largest sea on earth - the Coral Sea.
1/5 of the forest resources and more than 800 million cubic meters of timber are hidden in this vast forest sea, and all kinds of rare birds and animals appear and reproduce everywhere in the forest sea. The Amazon Plain, formed by the alluvial deposits of the Amazon River, has fertile land. It is hot and rainy here, with an annual rainfall of 1,500 to 2,500 mm, which is extremely beneficial to agricultural production.
Agricultural products are abundant here, especially rice, sugar cane, sweet potatoes, corn, tobacco, spices, coffee, cocoa, bananas, citrus, etc. The Amazon River is a paradise for freshwater fish. There are more than 2,000 species of fish in the rushing water. It is the river with the most fish in the world, many of which are unique to the Amazon River, such as the more than 2-meter-long and 300-kilogram Viraculous fish, electric eels and electric catfish with electric organs, etc.
The Amazon Basin's rich and unique tourism resources are the Amazon rainforest.
The Amazon rainforest is the world's largest forest and tropical rainforest. It is densely forested and has a wide variety of plants and animals. It is known as the "world's kingdom of plants and animals". The Amazon rainforest contains the world's richest and most diverse biological resources, with millions of species of insects, plants, birds and other organisms, many of which have not yet been scientifically recorded. Among the lush plants are various tree species, including myrtle, laurel, palm, acacia, rosewood, Brazil nut and rubber tree. Mahogany and Amazon cedar can be used as high-quality wood. The main wild animals are jaguars, manatees, tapirs, red deer, capybaras and many rodents, as well as many monkeys. It is known as the "world's kingdom of plants and animals". Because it accounts for half of the world's rainforests, it is called the "lungs of the earth".
