2. Guangxi, China has become a global biodiversity hotspot with more than 18,000 species.

Guangxi's biodiversity has four outstanding characteristics.

The first is the diversity of ecosystems. There are natural ecosystems such as forests, grasslands, karst, wetlands, and oceans. The forest coverage rate is 62.5%, ranking third in the country, and there are more than 1,000 vegetation types; wetland resources are rich and unique, with 24 types in 5 categories, including coastal, river, lake, swamp, and artificial; there are also karst ecosystems of various forms, such as karst caves and tiankengs. The northern tropical karst area is the largest and best-preserved karst landform in my country and one of the 17 key areas of terrestrial biodiversity with international significance. There is also the China Leye-Fengshan World Geopark.

Second, there are many biological species. The number of terrestrial wild animals ranks second in the country, and the number of wild plants ranks third in the country. The species-specific components are high. There are 18 terrestrial wild vertebrates that are only distributed in Guangxi, 350 known cave organisms, 150 unique species, and the diversity of cave fish is world-famous. The Beibu Gulf has extremely rare Bryde's whales, white dolphins, and Chinese horseshoe crabs; Camellia chrysantha is the only species in the camellia family with golden petals and is known as the "Queen of the Tea Clan". It was first discovered by Chinese scientists in the Shiwanda Mountains in Guangxi in 1960. Its distribution is extremely rare. More than 90% of the species of Camellia chrysantha group discovered in China are distributed in Chongzuo, Nanning, Fangchenggang, Baise and Hechi in Guangxi. Ziyuan Abies was first discovered in Yinzhulao Mountain in Ziyuan County, Guangxi in 1977 and was named after it. It is the "living evidence" of the periodic advance and retreat of Quaternary glaciers in southern my country and is a symbolic tree species for the protection of endangered species in the world.

Third, genetic resources are abundant. There are thousands of plants and their wild relatives, including about 1,200 cultivated crops and more than 4,000 economic forest plants; more than 60,000 crop genetic resources and more than 15,000 forest trees have been collected and preserved. The total inventory of crop genetic resources, the number of rice varieties, and wild rice germplasm resources are all ranked first in the country.

Fourth, traditional knowledge has distinct characteristics. Guangxi is the autonomous region with the largest ethnic minority population in the country, with 12 ethnic groups living there, including Zhuang, Han, Miao, Yao, and Dong. It has unique and rich ethnic customs and multi-ethnic cultures coexist. Traditional knowledge includes rice culture, colored cotton planting, Zhuang medicine, Yao medicine, etc. Ecological environmental protection is rooted in ethnic beliefs, and protecting biodiversity has become the conscious awareness and action of 57 million Zhuang people.
