Amazon has come this far by simply turning simple ideas into reality, and the person who came up with these ideas is its founder and CEO - Jeff Bezos.
Born in 1965, Jeff Bezos has loved to do things since he was a child. When he was three years old, he tried to modify the fence around his crib with a screwdriver. After graduating from high school with excellent grades, Bezos entered Princeton University, one of the eight Ivy League schools in the United States.
During college, Bezos was attracted by the rapidly changing computer industry at the time, so he switched his major to computers. When he graduated from college, Bezos received a double bachelor's degree in electronic engineering and computer science.
After graduating from college, Bezos worked at a trust company in New York, and became the youngest vice president on Wall Street in just four years.
Later, with the rise and development of the Internet economy, more and more people saw business opportunities. At this time, the young Bezos began to be responsible for developing new Internet businesses under the arrangement of the trust company boss.
Slowly, Bezos gradually developed his own ideas in his mind.
At that time, Bezos listed more than 20 commodities that might be suitable for Internet sales, including books, audio-visual products, magazines, home computers and software, etc., and finally locked on books because he saw the huge American book market that no one had yet entered.
But when Bezos proposed to his boss to develop online book sales business, he was rejected.
After being rejected, Bezos finally left the company and founded the first online retail company in the United States in a garage in Seattle in 1994, named Cadabra.
Soon after, because the company name was similar to the English word for dead body (cadaver), Bezos decided to name his company after Amazon, the world's second longest river in South America.
Bezos decided to use Amazon as the new name of the company not only because he hoped that his company would have a long history like the Amazon River in the future, but also because the name starts with A, which would allow his company to rank first in the corporate yellow pages.
Afterwards, Amazon was just like the vision given by Bezos. Since the first book was sold in 1995, Amazon's business has continued to expand, from the original book business to everything, from a small company with only three employees at the time to a multinational company with tens of thousands of employees worldwide.
In this way, Bezos put his initial optimistic idea of the Internet and the American book market into action, and finally created the e-commerce Amazon. The opportunity that prompted Amazon to transform into a technology company was Bezos's determination for books, but this time the physical books sold changed to e-books, and the sales channels also changed from the Internet to hardware.
In 2003, Apple launched the iTunes music store and it was a huge success, which had a great impact on Amazon, which mainly sold physical CD books. It was also at this time that Bezos began to realize that digital books would be the general trend: "Music and video have been digitized for a long time, and short reading has also been digitized since the early days of the Web. But long reading has not (digitized)."
Although Amazon had a lot of publisher resources at the time, it had no problem with e-books, but it still faced a situation where there was no suitable hardware available on the market, so in 2004 Amazon decided to develop its own e-reader.
After three long years of research and development, Amazon finally released the Kindle on November 19, 2007.
From the first generation of Kindle, it has revealed the development direction of "building a customer-centric service-oriented enterprise" set by Amazon since 2001. Not only is the shape and size similar to that of a paperback book, but it also has a search function that can adjust the font size and find words, which makes Kindle not only like a real paper book, but also has functions that paper books cannot match.
Then Kindle achieved great success, and it also brought Amazon dual income from selling hardware and e-books, but later Amazon seemed to have temporarily forgotten its original intention.
Seeing the hot mobile phone market, Amazon also wanted to get a piece of the pie. In 2014, it launched the Fire Phone, but due to blind imitation, it had no highlights and was abandoned by the market shortly after its launch.
The failure of the mobile phone cost Amazon $170 million, but it did not defeat it. Amazon immediately started again. The smart speaker Echo and voice recognition technology Alexa launched in November 2014 became the earliest smart speaker on the market and the hottest smart home product now.
Whether it is the e-commerce leader or the later transformation into a technology giant, the huge success of Amazon is due to Bezos's smart brain that can see the future trend one step ahead.
In fact, before Kindle, Bezos also saw the future of another field and quietly put it into practice. Although it did not immediately show its advantages at the time, it has now become Amazon's heirloom, which is Amazon's cloud service platform - AWS.
1. The platform is larger, facing the global market, and the target is no longer limited to the domestic market.
2. Convenient logistics. Amazon has multiple operation centers around the world, which can deliver goods to 185 countries and regions around the world.
3. Low competition. Amazon buyers have 400 million active users worldwide, covering 65 countries, and the number of products sold by third-party sellers accounts for more than half of the Amazon platform.
4. High profits. Customers in Europe and the United States have a high standard of living. Most people shop online. Amazon has the highest average customer unit price among major global shopping platforms.
5. Low return rate. Most domestic e-commerce shipments are made domestically, and returns and exchanges are common. Amazon's European station faces five European countries, with extremely low buyer consumption levels and return rates, and guaranteed profits.
6. Amazon does not require a deposit for opening a store, which greatly reduces our investment costs. The professional version service fee is US$39.99, which is about RMB 260.
