Yunqi Town is an industrial town dominated by cloud ecology that Xihu District plans to build based on the two major platforms of Alibaba Cloud Company and Zhuantang Science and Technology Economic Park. Yunqi Town is a gathering place for cloud computing industry ecology. It uses big data calculation to turn simple data into production factors. The town is to build an ecological system of "symbiosis, co-prosperity and sharing" around the characteristics of the cloud computing industry.

In October 2014, when Li Qiang, the former governor of Zhejiang Province, visited "Yunqi Town" in Xihu District, he first proposed "Let Hangzhou have one more beautiful characteristic town and let more innovative 'colorful clouds' float in the sky". The concept of characteristic town came from this and became clearer. Since then, Yunqi Town has been on the list of the first batch of 37 characteristic towns in Zhejiang Province.

In 2015, the Alibaba Cloud Developer Conference was officially renamed "Yunqi Conference" and permanently settled in Yunqi Town, Xihu District.

On May 24, 2018, Yunqi Town was selected as one of the top 50 most beautiful characteristic towns. Yunqi Town is located in the southern part of Hangzhou West Lake District and in the core area of ​​Hangzhou Zhijiang National Tourism Resort. It is one of the first ten demonstration characteristic industrial towns created in Zhejiang Province. The planned area of ​​the town is 3.5 square kilometers. In 2016, 200,000 square meters of industrial space were put into use. It is planned to gradually build more than 1 million square meters of buildings for industrial development within 3 years.
