I first encountered Nanjing in 2005, and later studied here, worked, got married, and had children. Because of my job, I have walked all over the streets and alleys of Nanjing for 15 years, and I know a little about the big and small things that happen every day, which can be regarded as a relatively comprehensive understanding of Nanjing. I will answer this question from several dimensions.
*Nanjing has a very high historical status. Known as the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties and the metropolis of the Ten Dynasties, it is the political, cultural, and military center of the area south of the Yangtze River in the history of my country. Once the Central Plains dynasty was threatened, the court moved to the south, with Nanjing as the ruling center, relying on the natural barrier of the Yangtze River to protect itself. For nearly 800 years after the Southern Song Dynasty, China's capital has always alternated between Beijing and Nanjing, which has already demonstrated Nanjing's important historical status.
Stone City
*History has left Nanjing with a rich heritage of ancient capitals. Shitoucheng was a military stronghold when Sun Quan established his capital during the Three Kingdoms period, where he practiced naval exercises. The Six Dynasties period not only left behind numerous stone carvings, but also left behind brilliant cultural heritages such as poetry, literature, and classics. The Ming Dynasty was the highlight of Nanjing, with city walls, the Ming Palace, the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, and the Baochuan Factory scattered throughout the city. In the Qing Dynasty, Nanjing was known as the spiritual homeland of the Han nationality, and the Confucius Temple has been prosperous until now. The Jiangnan Gongyuan has always been the largest imperial examination venue in China. The Taiping Heavenly Kingdom attacked Nanjing from the southwest and established a regime. After the Revolution of 1911, Sun Yat-sen used Nanjing as the temporary capital, and finally established the capital in Nanjing in 1926, ushering in the golden moment of the development of the Republic of China. The Presidential Palace, Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, various party and government agencies, the Republic of China residential area on Yihe Road, and the Republic of China-style university campus are still well preserved.
Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum
*Nanjing's economic development is commendable. On the basis of the economic development of the Republic of China, after the founding of the People's Republic of China, Nanjing developed rapidly in the fields of petrochemicals, machinery, electronics, steel, automobiles, and military industry, and became a domestic industrial base. Nowadays, emerging industries such as biomedicine, semiconductors, and electronic communications are also experiencing great development in Nanjing. From the data, Nanjing's GDP has reached 1.4 trillion yuan, ranking fifth among provincial capital cities; its per capita GDP exceeds 20,000 yuan, ranking high.
*One of the most important science and education centers in the country. Nanjing currently has two 985 universities, Nanjing University and Southeast University, and N 211 universities such as Nanjing University of Science and Technology, Nanjing Agricultural University, and China Pharmaceutical University. The strength of its universities is second only to Beijing and Shanghai. There are many scientific research institutes such as the Nanjing Branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Purple Mountain Observatory. Well-known companies such as ZTE, Huawei, Alibaba, and Tencent have established R&D institutions in Nanjing.
Nanjing University
*A transportation hub in East China. Nanjing has very convenient transportation, with high-speed railways, highways, and waterways extending in all directions. Nanjing South Station is the largest high-speed railway station in Asia; Lukou Airport ranks among the top ten airports in the country; the city's transportation planning is reasonable, and the subway mileage ranks fourth in the country. It is one of the few large cities with convenient transportation.
*Nanjing is a popular tourist destination in China. Nanjing has a long history and a warm climate. It has well-known domestic attractions such as the Ming City Wall, Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, Nanjing Museum, Confucius Temple, Xuanwu Lake, etc. It is a rare "mountain, water, city and forest" scenic spot in China.
*An important national military center. Nanjing is the headquarters of the Eastern Theater Command. It has many military academies such as Nanjing Political College, PLA University of Science and Technology, Artillery College, Naval University of Engineering, as well as scientific research units of military enterprises such as Panda, Chenguang, Fenghuo, Jincheng, 14th Institute, and 28th Institute.
Through the above dimensions, I must have a deep impression of Nanjing. To add three more points, Nanjing's area code is the three-digit 025, the average house price exceeds 30,000, and Xinjiekou is known as the first business district in China. These three points have already explained Nanjing's current position in the national development pattern!
