Ant Financial's largest shareholder is Alibaba. Ant Financial's initial shareholders were Hangzhou Junhan and Hangzhou Junao Limited Partnerships (controlled by Jack Ma). After two rounds of financing, Ant Financial has introduced state-owned shareholders including Social Security Gene, China Investment Corporation Overseas, CCB Trust, China Development Bank Financial, and the four major insurance companies (China Life/PICC/CPIC/Xinhua). According to information disclosed by the media, during the A/B rounds of financing, Social Security Gene/China Investment Corporation Overseas invested 5%/3% respectively (after the rounds), making them the external shareholders with the highest proportion.

Ant Technology Group Co., Ltd. started with Alipay, which was established in 2004.

In March 2013, Alipay's parent company announced that it would use it as the main body to build a small and micro financial services group, and small and micro finance became the predecessor of Ant Financial.

In July 2020, Ant Financial was officially renamed Ant Group. Ant Group, with the vision of "making credit equal to wealth", is committed to building an open ecosystem. Through the "Internet Booster Plan", it helps financial institutions and partners accelerate their move towards "Internet +" and provide inclusive financial services for small and micro enterprises and individual consumers. Ant Financial has Alipay, Yu'ebao, Zhaocaibao, Ant Jubao, MyBank, Ant Huabei, Sesame Credit, Ant Financial Cloud, Ant Dake and other sub-business segments. Alipay, owned by Ant Financial, is a life platform centered on each person and based on real names and trust. Since its establishment in 2004, by the end of 2015, Alipay has reached cooperation with more than 200 financial institutions, providing payment services for nearly 10 million small and micro merchants, and expanding its service scenarios. Over the years, Alipay has been loved by more users. By the end of 2015, it has more than 400 million real-name users and provided more than 4,000 comprehensive services to 370 cities.
