Don Valentine, founder of Sequoia Capital, was born in New York in 1932 and studied chemistry at Fordham University. Before he founded Sequoia Capital, every company Valentine worked for was a big name. He moved to Southern California in the 1950s and became a sales engineer for Raytheon, a large defense contractor and one of the top five weapons suppliers to the U.S. Department of Defense.
Later, he moved to the San Francisco Peninsula to join Fairchild Semiconductor to get involved in the semiconductor industry.
He founded Sequoia Capital in 1972 and has invested in companies including Oracle, Cisco, Yahoo, Google, LSI, and more.
Don Valentine, founder of Sequoia Capital and one of the leaders who made Silicon Valley a legend, died today at his home in Woodside, California, at the age of 87. These early investments made Sequoia Capital famous. The name "Redwood" that Don chose for the partnership business symbolizes the tenacious and long-lasting vitality of the redwood tree, just like his personal character, and also conveys the humility of a founder who did not name the company after himself.
