On February 20, 1999, the fifth day of the Chinese New Year, in a community called Lakeside Garden, on the third floor of Building 16, 18 people gathered together for a mobilization meeting. The room was almost bare, with only a broken sofa on one side, and most people sat on the floor.

Alibaba's starting capital was 500,000 yuan, which was raised by 18 people. Jack Ma did not lack the money, but he hoped that the company would belong to everyone, so the 18 people all contributed money, each holding a different proportion of shares, written on a piece of paper, in very short English.
