Zhang Lei was born in Mudanjiang City, Heilongjiang Province in 1981. He attended Jinggangshan Primary School in primary school and Mudanjiang No. 9 Middle School in junior high school. He transferred to Hualin School in the third year of junior high school. Zhang Lei left his hometown at the age of 21 and went from the northeast to the northwest. Later, he met his wife and stayed in Urumqi, Xinjiang. Zhang Lei worked in a small shop selling lighters during the day and sang in bars at night. He once performed in the same bar with Parhat.
