Douyin is a music creative short video social software incubated by ByteDance. The software was launched on September 20, 2016. It is a short video community platform for all ages. Users can use this software to select songs and shoot music works to form their own works.

On the afternoon of January 18, 2019, CCTV and Douyin Short Video held a news work meeting, officially announcing that Douyin will become the exclusive social media communication platform for the "2019 CCTV Spring Festival Gala". The new media action of "Another Happy Year" for the 2019 CCTV Spring Festival Gala was announced at the meeting. Douyin will carry out all-round and in-depth cooperation with CCTV Spring Festival Gala in the fields of short video promotion and social interaction, mobilize the vast number of young groups, face the Chinese people around the world, replace comments with participation, guide attention with participation, and help spread the Spring Festival Gala.

On July 30, 2020, the Beijing Internet Court made a judgment and determined that the Douyin App had violated the user's personal information.

On September 14, the Cyberspace Administration of China announced that there were a large number of negative information and behaviors in the Douyin app that induced minors to participate in cheering and ranking, large-scale consumption, and incited and provoked young fan groups to tear each other apart and curse.

In September, the Beijing Municipal Market Supervision Bureau convened the heads of six Internet companies including Douyin to hold an administrative interview meeting on e-commerce platforms to implement the "Yangtze River Fishing Ban, Anti-Illegal Operation and Chain Breaking" work.

In January 2021, the "Douyin" platform was administratively punished.

In June 2021, Douyin was fined 30,000 yuan for providing prohibited content[60]; On January 26, 2021, Douyin and CCTV Spring Festival Gala jointly announced that Douyin became the exclusive red envelope interactive partner of the 2021 CCTV Spring Festival Gala; On June 21, Douyin officially launched the internal beta of the web version, and its official website page was also revamped[61]; On September 1, Douyin issued an announcement on further strengthening the special rectification of the chaos in the "fan circle".
