Taobao went online on May 10, 2003, directly challenging eBay. Three years later, eBay withdrew from the Chinese market.
As for why the newly born Taobao was able to beat the extremely powerful eBay at the time? One important point is that eBay charges entry fees and transaction fees to merchants, while Jack Ma announced Taobao's three-year free strategy. The free strategy is a lethal weapon in Taobao's competition with eBay.
In October 2005, Jack Ma once again announced an additional investment of 1 billion yuan in Taobao and promised to provide free services for three years.
In 2006, Jack Ma announced that the war with eBay was over. Taobao has occupied 70% of the Chinese C2C market, far surpassing eBay China. In December of the same year, eBay officially gave up the Chinese C2C market.
Everyone knows that Alibaba defeated EBAY in just a few years. Was it because Alibaba's website was well built? Was it because Alibaba promoted itself well? Was it because Jack Ma was a good person? Or was it because EBAY was not a good website on the Internet at that time? I have my doubts...
